Arriving at Oban it is time to take a wander around this, at one time, fishing village but now a centre for the ferry service to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. The new yachting marina is always busy in the season and quite often bigger cruise ships are to be seen anchoring off the bay. ext slide
It’s the largest town in the area and hospitality is probably the biggest business here – many hotels, guest houses and b & b’s line the streets and esplanade.
Fish & chip shops, seafood restaurants, cafes and bars are easy to find. Lots of shops for window shopping or buying those little presents for family and friends or treating yourself.
For whisky lovers a visit to The Oban distillery is a must but must be pre-booked. There are also specialist whisky shops.
Keen walkers would enjoy a little ferry trip to The Island of Kerrera (no cars allowed) and, of course, for a day trip – over to Mull – the nearest large island, to visit Duart Castle, or farther to include the tranquil and historic Abbey on The Island of Iona on the south of Mull. Boat trips are also available to Staffa to see the puffins (May – August) and to marvel at Fingal’s Cave.
In the north of Mull the largest town is Tobermory – known as Ballamory in a pre-school BBC programe some years ago. the colourful houses appear in series and you might even meet PC Plod! The town is also a haven for visiting yachts and small cruise boats in the summer and has a very fine distillery.
